A Virgin Atlantic Airways jumbo jet with 314 people aboard was forced to land Monday in Newfoundland, escorted by Canadian fighter jets, after a bomb threat was received, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
Four Canadian Forces CF-18 jet fighters escorted the passenger jet to the airport in Goose Bay, and the passengers were evacuated after the landing, the RCMP said. The plane was en route from London’s Heathrow Airport to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.
A police spokesman said the threat came from an external source, not from aboard the plane.
