The Macy-Elvis Connection
Every critic loved Macy Gray’s first CD (Record Rack, by Robert Hilburn, Sept. 16). With so much praise, I figured they all couldn’t be wrong. They referred to her voice as quirky, eclectic, odd, unusual, squeaky and distinctive. When so many praised her, other critics were afraid to rock the boat (tell the truth). Critics read other critics’ reviews. They should have referred to her voice as annoying or horrible. They should have said she couldn’t sing.
David Lee Roth once said that every critic loves Elvis Costello because they all look like Elvis Costello. If these critics sang, they would all sound like Macy Gray.
