Arming Pilots May Help Fly the Safer Skies

Share

Because of the horrific tragedy in New York, the airline pilots’ union is asking Congress for permission to carry guns on flights (“Bush May Agree to Federalize Air Security,” Sept. 25). Some gun control advocates are opposed to this because of the possibility of an accident resulting from the actions of an armed pilot. On the other hand, many passengers would feel much safer having the pilots armed. I think I have a solution that would satisfy both groups.

From now on, airlines will be required to provide flights with both armed and unarmed pilots. Passengers can choose which flight they prefer. This way, gun control advocates can feel safe taking flights without armed pilots and they won’t have to worry about the possibility of a shooting accident. The rest of us can choose a flight with an armed pilot, and we won’t have to worry about the possibility of terrorists or having to sit next to a gun control advocate.

Many lives and industries are being negatively impacted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but none as deeply or uniquely as the airline industry. Layoffs and service reductions of 20% or more are common throughout the industry. The highly paid executives of these corporations could set an inspirational example to many Americans and help the bottom lines of their ailing companies by taking voluntary reductions of 20% in their big salaries. This should be a requirement of any bailout package.
