County OKs Contract for Touch-Screen Voting
Palm Beach County, the home of the butterfly ballot that fueled much of the dispute in the 2000 presidential election, has become the first in Florida to sign a contract for computer touch-screen voting devices.
County voters will use the new electronic machines, estimated to cost $14 million, in next spring’s municipal elections and in the fall 2002 elections, which include the gubernatorial race.
“It’s out with the old punch cards that we started with in 1976 and in with the new touch-screen technology,” Supervisor of Elections Theresa LePore said.
