Monks’ Fall Fest Opens in Valyermo

The Benedictine monks of St. Andrew’s Abbey will hold their annual fall festival from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday at the monastery’s 750-acre ranch, 31001 N. Valyermo Road, Valyermo.

The festival includes arts and crafts demonstrations, country music, two flea markets and a boutique. One of the most visited attractions at St. Andrew’s is the studio where Belgium-born Father Maur’s ceramic plaques and figurines are decorated and finished. There are more than 1,500 angel figurines available for purchase.

EVENTS

The Khandakapala Buddhist Center will open its new temple today at 1492 Blake Ave., Los Angeles. It will offer guided meditation from 11 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 4 p.m. The meditation will be led by Kadampa Buddhist masters and focus on transforming the fear and sorrow of recent terrorist events into responses that can create peace of mind. LECTURES

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will hold a discussion and brunch titled “Sept. 11, 2001--Toward a Faith Response” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at 580 Hilgard Ave., Los Angeles. Najwa Al-Qattan, an expert on Middle Eastern history and assistant professor at Loyola Marymount University, will be the guest speaker. Child care will be provided. A $5 donation is requested. * Bible lecturer Larry L. Davis will present “Global Solutions for Global Problems” at 7:30 p.m. today at the Burbank Auditorium, 2150 Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank. Davis will discuss possible solutions to global warming, pollution and political conflict through various Bible prophecies. The lecture is sponsored by the Bible Students Church of Los Angeles. * Arcadia Presbyterian Church will host “Finding Your Identity in Christ,” led by former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at 121 Alice St., Arcadia. CONCERTS

St. Mel Church will present Les Archets de France at 7:30 p.m. Friday at 20870 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills. The European chamber ensemble consists of six stringed instruments and one woodwind. The ensemble will present Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and the “Meditation” from “Thais.” A reception sponsored by the Los Angeles French Chamber of Commerce will follow.
