Police Forces Ordered to Respect Privacy
Iran’s police chief said he had ordered his forces not to intrude into people’s private lives amid growing debate over the limits of personal freedom in the Islamic republic.
Brig. Gen. Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf did not say specifically whether his forces would halt raids on private homes to break up Western-style parties or seize alcohol or satellite dishes--banned under Iran’s Islamic laws.
“We are determined not to intrude in people’s private lives. Islam does not allow us to do such things, and the country’s leadership frowns on this nowadays,” he said on state television.
“People have control of their private turf and can follow a lifestyle of their choice,” he added.
