Schneider Defines Two-Party Stalemate
Re “Politics Remain Stalemated,” Opinion, March 31: Kudos to William Schneider for his definition of the American body politic. As a dedicated secularist, I am deeply saddened to see the Republican Party become the political base for conservative Christian orthodoxy. No better example of this is the current Bush administration’s opposition to government-funded embryonic stem cell research, abortion and physician-assisted suicide. At the same time, it supports government funding for religious charities and prayer in public schools. Government is best when its policies are fact-based, not faith-based.

So we are at a political stalemate. Thank God. May it forever hold power. As long as the Respendlicans and the Spendocrats bicker over partisan issues, boondoggles like free drugs for seniors and a “meaningful” economic stimulus package probably won’t get passed. Oh, and by the way, my taxes won’t go up much either.
