US Airways Group Inc. named Neal Cohen chief financial officer and changed eight other executive positions as new Chief Executive David Siegel began assembling his management team.

Cohen, 41, has held financial positions at Northwest Airlines Corp. and General Motors Corp., US Airways said. He will succeed Thomas Mutryn, 48, who is leaving the airline. A company spokesman said he was unaware of Mutryn’s plans.

Siegel, who joined US Airways last month, brought in six new executives, including Cohen, and promoted three veterans of the Arlington, Va.-based company. Siegel follows former CEO Rakesh Gangwal in trying to reduce costs and revive sales amid a business travel slowdown and the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The airline’s other moves include naming Greg Taylor, senior vice president of planning, as head of the US Airways Express unit, and promoting Michelle Bryan to executive vice president and general counsel from senior vice president of human resources.

The changes take effect Monday.

The company’s shares closed up 34 cents at $6.10 on the NYSE, before the executive appointments were announced.
