Governor Sues Ethics Panel Over Gift Rules

From Times Wire Reports

Gov. Mike Huckabee sued the state Ethics Commission, seeking to halt its investigation into whether he illegally accepted $9,000 in gifts last year.

Huckabee, a Republican who is running for his second full term, asked the court to declare the state law regulating gifts to public servants unconstitutionally vague.

Although there are exceptions, the commission said the law prohibits gifts worth more than $100 to public servants.

Huckabee’s lawyer, Kevin Crass, accused the commission of interpreting the gift rules arbitrarily, claiming it did not pursue the case of state Land Commissioner Charlie Daniels, who reported receiving a gift worth $700 from his staff in 2000.
