‘Me’ Therapy Gets a Comic Twist

“Just Shoot Me” may not aim for any kind of high-minded TV breakthrough, but in its sixth season it still hits the humorous mark with its gently cynical take on relationships, vanity and office politics.

The Blush magazine staff gets a dose of corporate therapy in tonight’s episode (9:30 p.m. NBC), written by Brian Reich and directed by Pam Fryman.

Playing herself, New York handbag designer Kate Spade (real-life sister-in-law of series co-star David Spade) visits the fashion magazine to discuss a promotional campaign, but the staff’s rude antics scare her away.

Publisher Jack (George Segal) hires New Age therapist Drake “Dr. Drake” Kelson (guest star Stephen Root, the bumbling boss from “NewsRadio”) to help the hostile staff achieve harmony.

Dr. Drake manipulates Finch (Spade), Nina (Wendie Malick) and Maya (Laura San Giacomo) with mindless psychobabble, but Elliott (Enrico Colantoni) grows suspicious.

All the more so when Dr. Drake makes him lean forward on one leg and twirl his arms like windmills, a supposed relaxation technique from Nepal.

When Elliott confronts Dr. Drake, the quack concocts a scheme to get him fired.

If you expect this all to end warmly with a group hug, you’re watching the wrong show.
