The rising cost of housing has prompted San Diego officials to seek the declaration of a housing crisis.

The City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee intends to consider the action Wednesday in response to rising rents and home prices in the region.

“I think you have a very serious problem here, maybe as bad as it is anywhere,” U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez said Friday during a visit to a homeless shelter.

Martinez, the nation’s top housing official, said he was not aware of any other cities that have declared such a crisis.

Nearly 75% of San Diego County’s households cannot afford the median price of $300,000 for a single-family home.
