William F. Stewart, 65; Retired National Guard Commanding General

Maj. Gen. William F. Stewart, 65, a retired commanding general of the California Army National Guard’s 40th Infantry Division, died April 15 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The cause of death was not announced.

Born in Cleveland, Stewart graduated from UCLA, where he earned his law degree. He practiced law as a deputy counsel for Los Angeles. He later served as the first director of the county’s Internal Services Department.

Stewart’s Army National Guard career began in 1962, when he enlisted in the then 40th Armored Division. He completed his basic training at Ft. Ord and obtained his commission through the California Military Academy in 1964. He also graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College
