From Times Wire Reports

The front-runner for the Republican nomination in New Jersey’s Senate race dropped out, four days after federal agents seized financial records from his office.

James Treffinger, the Essex County executive, withdrew after losing support of state and national GOP officials in the race to unseat Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli.

“There comes a time when the interest of the party as a whole and, in particular, those who have supported me, must outweigh my own personal desires,” Treffinger said in a written statement.

The federal investigation appears to focus on contractors who have worked for Essex County as well as campaign contributions to Treffinger.
