The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday put off a decision on the selection of an interim LAPD chief to replace retiring Bernard C. Parks until next week, and also began closed session deliberations on procedures for finding Parks’ permanent replacement.

The commission has authorized the city’s personnel department to seek a headhunting firm to aid in the search for a new chief.

Commissioners are also considering appointing a blue-ribbon citizens panel to develop criteria for selection of a new chief. The process might take six months, said commission President Rick Caruso.

The commission will resume consideration next Tuesday of about eight unnamed candidates for the job of interim chief, including several current deputy chiefs and commanders, and retired LAPD officials.

While Parks, who said he will retire next week, is vacationing, Deputy Chief Michael Bostic is in command. Bostic said Tuesday he will not apply for the permanent job because it would take too much time from his family.
