Rare Tiger Cub Makes a Public Appearance
From Times Wire Reports
A 7-month-old rare Sumatran tiger rolled on his back and batted a toy between his paws as cameras captured his outdoor debut at the National Zoo in Washington.
Berani’s subspecies originated on one of the larger islands of Indonesia. “ ‘Berani’ means ‘bold’ or ‘brave’ and he lives up to it,” senior zoo curator John Seidensticker said.
The cub, born Sept. 18, is old enough--and temperatures are warm enough--to venture outside.
Just 750 of the tigers survive, 250 of them in zoos. Zoo births are rare.
