New sewer requirements for northern and central Orange County won approval Friday from the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board, officials said.
The aim is to prevent beach closures caused by sewage spills, the board’s assistant executive officer, Kurt Berchtold, said of the decision.
Effective immediately, the mandate is set for 27 agencies, including municipalities, sanitation districts and other special organizations that are responsible for collecting and treating sewage in the county.
These agencies must submit a plan and schedule for developing a sewage system maintenance program by Sept. 30, Berchtold said.
