New Chapter for an Old Reading Program

Re “School Excels in Reading by Sticking With What Works,” April 1:

Your article made me smile when it mentioned that the phonics-based program called Open Court is gaining notice nationally. It seems that Open Court is making believers of many teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

My older children, now 27 and 29, were fortunate to be in the first-grade classroom of a wonderful teacher.

The late Wanda Nicholas was a strong advocate of Open Court over 20 years ago in the Westminster School District. She retired the year that California dropped Open Court from its state-approved reading programs. I’m glad to see it’s been rediscovered.
