Re “Rising Pedestrian Death Toll Studied,” April 24: It seems that the only way to reduce pedestrian deaths is to add a pedestrian cycle to the traffic signals at intersections. During this pedestrian cycle, only pedestrians are allowed into the intersection. They can cross the street in any direction, including diagonally. Sufficient time must be provided for them to complete the crossing, even for the handicapped.

The traffic lights for cars in all directions are red, and no cars are allowed into the intersection. The penalty for violators is a heavy fine and mandatory imprisonment. Critics may argue that the pedestrian cycle will add cost and increase travel time. But if it saves lives, isn’t it worth the cost and time?
