Battles raged between rival Somalian warlords in the southern town of Baidoa, killing at least 13 people and wounding 30, witnesses and hospital workers said.

Residents said militiamen used antiaircraft guns, rocket-propelled grenades, antitank guns and mortars as they fought for control of the town. About 45 people are believed to have died since the clashes began Saturday. Most were civilians caught in the cross-fire.

Somalia, a country of 7 million, descended into chaos in 1991 and is divided into militia-run fiefdoms.
