Protesters Call for President’s Overthrow

Thousands of protesters in Gonaives, Haiti, hurled stones and thrust back outnumbered riot police, as militant community leaders called for a nationwide uprising to oust President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Protest leader Jean Tatoune said that “Aristide has to go.” Tatoune was one of 159 prisoners who escaped Friday when armed supporters crashed a stolen tractor through a prison wall in Gonaives.
