Sheriff’s detectives are asking for the public’s help in solving a July 25 shooting in the Athens area that killed 18-year-old Jamaal Wimberly when he was gunned down while walking home from his girlfriend’s house.

Wimberly was trying to make his 10:30 p.m. curfew when he was shot about 10 p.m. on West 102nd Street near Van Ness Avenue, his father, Alonzo Wimberly said.

Detectives have not determined a motive.

Witnesses saw Wimberly being chased by a man down 102nd Street before he was shot.

An avid basketball player, Wimberly had just graduated from Washington High School.

Usually, he drove the family’s car to and from his girlfriend’s house, which was about five blocks away from their home, Alonzo Wimberly said.
