Communist Party Labeled Terrorist by U.S.
The U.S. State Department designated the Communist Party of the Philippines as a foreign terrorist organization.
The party’s military wing, known as the New People’s Army, has been fighting for three decades to establish a Marxist state.
“The New People’s Army strongly opposes any U.S. presence in the Philippines and has killed U.S. citizens there,” Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said in a statement. The terrorist designation makes it illegal for U.S. residents to give the group money or other support and requires U.S. banks to freeze the group’s assets.
