There’s More to Iraq Than Bush vs. Hussein

Re “Weighing a Just War, or Settling an Old Score?” Commentary, Aug. 6: Robert Scheer would now lead us all to a phantasmagoric world where President Bush is responsible for all evil except the assassination of William McKinley and where Saddam Hussein is a believable statesman. Considering his almost pathetic zeal to find a country that is not led by Bush, I recommend that Scheer just leave town for a few years, except that it sadly appears he has already taken a left turn into hell.

It sounds simplistic to go ahead with a massive military operation against Iraq and, in essence, back Hussein into a corner. This gives him the impetus to come out fighting with all he’s got. Where’s the evidence and where are the allies to approve of this policy decision? Our powers that be, especially Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the main players in the ’91 Gulf War, need to step back and let the Congress fully and openly debate the subject. Former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft just voiced his opposition.

Am I simplistic to believe our president will stop at nothing to win reelection as a wartime president? His father’s administration should have taught him otherwise.

When we occupy Iraq and march into downtown Baghdad, Hussein will be sitting on his front porch in a rocking chair waiting for us. We will quickly handcuff him and send him off to Guantanamo Bay, and we will never hear of him again. Then we will convert this Muslim nation to democracy and Christianity, and we will all live happily ever after.

When it comes to foreign policy, Bush sees himself as Austin Powers and Hussein as Dr. Evil. When a president’s worldview has all the nuance of a Mike Myers movie, we’re all in trouble, baby.
