From Times Staff Reports

Authorities on Saturday were investigating the death of a 33-year-old inmate in the Ventura County Jail.

The Oxnard man, who was not identified pending notification of his family, was awaiting trial in October on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said. He had been incarcerated since March, according to Sgt. Arnie Aviles of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

The inmate was found in his bed at 11:15 a.m. Saturday by deputies, who had attempted to awaken him for a meal. During a routine check about an hour earlier, Aviles said, deputies reported seeing the inmate sleeping and heard him snoring.

Revival efforts by jail staff members, paramedics and Ventura firefighters failed, and he was pronounced dead at Ventura County Medical Center at 12:47 p.m., authorities said.

“There was no sign of suicide or foul play,” Aviles said.
