Separated Twin Begins Breathing on Her Own
From Times Staff Reports
One of the formerly conjoined Guatemalan twins has started breathing on her own, officials at UCLA said Wednesday.
A breathing tube was removed Tuesday afternoon from Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez. She and sister Maria Teresa were separated in a complex operation Aug. 6. Maria Teresa is still on a respirator but is doing well.
Both girls remain in critical condition but with stable vital signs in the pediatric intensive care unit at UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital in Westwood.
