Initial Jobless Claims Rise to 388,000 in U.S.

The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week as companies continued thinning payrolls.

States received 388,000 initial applications, a rise of 6,000, the Labor Department said. Claims the previous week, at 382,000, were higher than previously estimated.
