Weighing Voter Options in the Governor’s Race

Share

I wonder if the Republican Party realizes the mistake they are making by not backing candidate Bill Simon for governor. If Gray Davis wins reelection he will surely be on the ticket as Hillary Clinton’s vice president. Then the Democrats will have all the electoral votes of the two largest states. One wonders why the Republicans don’t pull their head out of the sand.

California voters are faced with the sad November choice between Very Gray Davis and Simple Simon for our next governor. The incumbent proves to be an expert at raising funds from corporate supporters of energy and other budget-busting companies, while Simon remains a questionable fund manager. However, I see a welcome alternative choice. We can write in our choice on the ballot. Richard Riordan, former mayor of California’s largest city, did run for governor as a Republican, but was denied the candidacy by that party’s ultraconservatives. Riordan was a great mayor. He represented all the people--moderates, liberals and independents. He was respected throughout the state. He would be a better governor than either major party candidate.
