U.N. Cuts Rations as Food Aid Runs Out

From Times Wire Reports

The U.N. World Food Program is cutting rations for millions of hungry Afghans because international donors have failed to deliver promised cash, officials said.

Some 6 million Afghans will need food aid in the next year, the U.N. said. The WFP has appealed for $285 million this year but is short $90 million.

Refugees returning from abroad used to receive a one-time handout of 550 pounds of wheat to get them back on their feet. That was cut this month to 220 pounds, and Guy Gauvreau, the WFP’s representative for northern Afghanistan, said he feared a cut to 110 pounds within two weeks if aid does not arrive.
