Two U.S. Special Forces soldiers were shot and wounded on an intelligence-gathering mission in central Afghanistan, the U.S. military said Monday.

One soldier was shot in the calf and the other in the upper thigh in the attack early Sunday in Oruzgan province, Col. Roger King said at Bagram air base, the U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan.

Four men were detained for questioning. The soldiers, whose names were not released, were being treated at Bagram until their conditions stabilized. A spokeswoman said they would be flown to Germany late Monday.

A U.S. air raid in Oruzgan in July killed more than 40 civilians, according to Afghan authorities, who say that many of those who died were celebrating at a wedding party.

Results of investigations by the United States and a separate U.N. fact-finding group have not yet been released.

It was not known whether the troops injured Sunday were part of the investigation. U.S. troops have also been pursuing remnants of Al Qaeda and the Taliban regime in the area.
