Japan and North Korea, in their first high-level talks in two years, stood firm on long-standing disputes that have prevented them from establishing diplomatic ties, ending the first day at an impasse.

The talks between foreign ministry bureaucrats covered little new ground even though isolated North Korea had shown signs of wanting to improve ties with the West.

Japan wants to find 11 missing Japanese who Tokyo says were abducted by Pyongyang in the 1970s and ‘80s. North Korea denies the charges and wants an apology and compensation for its suffering during Japan’s 1910-45 colonization of the Korean peninsula.
