Citizens Panel Stresses Community Policing
A citizens panel assisting with the search for a new Los Angeles police chief urged city officials Monday to pick a leader who can transform the force from an “aggressive command-and-control crime-suppression culture” to one based on community policing.
The 15-member committee, which will present its recommendations to the Police Commission at its meeting today, also said the next chief should “know the Los Angeles Police Department, and understand its formal and informal cultures and history.”
The Police Commission is expected to give Mayor James K. Hahn a list of the top three candidates in mid-September.
