37 Die as Bus Plunges Into Gorge in Kashmir
From Times Wire Reports
A crowded bus plunged nearly 400 feet into a gorge near Khalani in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state, killing at least 37 people and injuring 20 others, police said. The driver apparently lost control on a sharp bend in the mountainous road.
Volunteers used ropes to lower themselves into the gorge to reach the bus, which was carrying more than 60 people when it crashed but had seats for only 25, police said.
Khalani is about 95 miles northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of the Himalayan state.
