New GE Medical Software OKd

General Electric Co.’s medical systems unit received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for software that combines three-dimensional X-ray and magnetic resonance images.

The software can be used by physicians to locate brain disorders with a high degree of precision, General Electric Medical Systems said in a release.

Magnetic resonance images are used to detect tumors and three-dimensional X-ray images show blood vessels that are too small to be seen with magnetic resonance images, the company said.

The software is the first that combines the two techniques, the company said.

Shares of Fairfield, Conn.-based GE fell 3 cents to $27.12 Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.
