R.C. Slocum was fired by Texas A&M; on Monday, ending his 14-year tenure as coach of the Aggies.

Despite a victory over then-No. 1 Oklahoma, the Aggies finished a disappointing 6-6 in the regular season, capped by a 50-20 loss to Texas on Friday.

Slocum’s 123 career victories were the most in school history, and he never had a losing season.

“It was with great sadness and disappointment that I learned today that I was being fired as the head football coach at Texas A&M;,” Slocum said in a prepared statement.

“We had a season where we lost several close games that could have gone either way and no one was more disappointed than me with our record. However, we have some really outstanding young players and I felt our future was bright.”

Slocum was 123-47-2 with the Aggies, but only 29-23 in the last four seasons. The Aggies have lost three in a row to Texas.

Slocum, 58, won four conference championships, including the Big 12 Conference title in 1998.

In a statement, the school said Slocum was asked to become special advisor to Texas A&M; President Robert M. Gates.
