Rioters Burn Premier’s Home; 2 Die in Unrest

Rioters burned the house of East Timor’s prime minister after police fired on a student demonstration, witnesses and U.N. sources said. Two people were killed in the unrest.
The burning of Mari Alkatiri’s house topped a day of looting and arson targeting shops and hotels in the capital, Dili. The violence, the bloodiest since the poverty-stricken country became independent in May, was sparked by the recent arrest of a student.
