* Higher interest rates suppressed demand for mortgage refinancings last week, a Mortgage Bankers Assn. of America survey showed, but applications for new loans to buy homes rose, indicating continued strength in the housing market.

* Expedia Inc. said it would start charging customers booking fees of $5 per airline ticket, seeking to make up for lost revenue from reduced commissions and other payments to travel agencies.

* Financially strapped American Airlines said it would cut about 1,100 flight attendant jobs in coming months as it tries to save money by operating fewer flights.
