With 84-year-old Nelson Mandela at her side, American talk show queen Oprah Winfrey broke ground in South Africa Friday for what will be the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. She is putting up $10 million for it.

“We are looking for strong, brave girls with heart. I believe girls are going to take over the world. Men have been in control long enough but, don’t worry, we’re prepared to share power,” Winfrey said at the ceremony on the 22-acre wooded site, 25 miles south of Johannesburg.

The academy’s doors will open in January 2005 and Winfrey’s millions will be spent over a decade to build it and run it with the provincial education ministry, according to Caren Yanis, executive director of the Oprah Winfrey Foundation.
