Suspect, 66, Surrenders After Standoff in Bank Branch
A man with a suspicious device strapped to his chest holed up inside a Wells Fargo bank branch in Banning for more than five hours Tuesday as people inside fled, including some who climbed to the roof and shimmied down a pole.
The man surrendered about 5:30 p.m. after talking to authorities by phone. He was identified as Valine Ulmer, 66, of Banning, officials said.
He was handcuffed and led away from the bank in his underwear, apparently to ensure that he was not concealing other suspicious devices.
About seven people were inside the bank when the man walked in about noon, authorities said. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Law enforcement officials continued their examination of the device Tuesday night.
