Authorities Defuse 5 Car Bombs in Capital
Colombian authorities said they narrowly thwarted a devastating rebel attack in Bogota, the capital, defusing five large car bombs.
The cars were each packed with at least 550 pounds of explosives and rigged with remote controls that allowed the bombers to guide the vehicles to their designated targets, including a police barracks and a bus station. Police arrested six suspects.
Meanwhile, President Alvaro Uribe was briefly moved to an army base because of an unconfirmed plot by rebels to assassinate him during a trip to the city of Medellin.
