Lewis’ Decision Due Today

Washington Redskin defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis is expected to decide today whether to accept a five-year, $7.5-million offer to become coach at Michigan State.

The Washington Post reported in today’s editions that Lewis remained in talks with Michigan State officials and that if he accepted the job, he would likely resign his duties immediately with the Redskins.

Another report on Comcast Sports Net said that Lewis had broken off talks with Michigan State and was hopeful of landing a head coaching job in the NFL.

Arizona State junior defensive end Terrell Suggs, who set an NCAA record with 22 sacks, won the Lombardi Award as the nation’s top lineman. Suggs won over defensive end Cory Redding of Texas, linebacker E. J. Henderson of Maryland and defensive tackle Tommie Harris of Oklahoma.... Iowa junior Dallas Clark was named the winner of the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end. Clark won over Miami’s Kellen Winslow Jr., and UCLA’s Mike Seidman.... Iowa junior Nate Kaeding won the 2002 Lou Groza Award, given annually to the top Division I-A kicker.

Kaeding won over sophomore finalists Mike Nugent of Ohio State and Jared Siegel of Oregon.

A kidney ailment that sidelined Southern Mississippi running back Derrick Nix for 18 months has flared up and made his status for the Dec. 27 Houston Bowl questionable.

Nix has been taking medication for the last two years to treat the disease that causes protein levels in his blood to rise and his body to swell with fluids.

Doctors are readjusting his dosage.

Utah hired Bowling Green’s Urban Meyer, 38, to replace the fired Ron McBride as coach. Meyer went 17-6 in two seasons at Bowling Green.... Guy Morriss was introduced as Baylor’s coach during a news conference at Waco, Texas. Morriss, 51, from Colorado City, Texas, was 9-14 in two seasons at Kentucky.

Miami Coach Larry Coker says he will meet with all his draft-eligible sophomores and juniors in the next two weeks to help them make an educated decision before the deadline to make themselves eligible for the NFL draft. Receiver Andre Johnson, running back Willis McGahee, offensive tackle Vernon Carey, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and linebackers Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams are considered potential early selections.... Nebraska Coach Frank Solich says Scott Frost, a former Cornhusker quarterback on the Green Bay Packers’ injured reserve list, has agreed to join the staff as a graduate assistant through the Dec. 27 Independence Bowl.... Lou Saban, 81, resigned as coach of Division III Chowan after an 0-10 season and will be replaced by Steve Gill.
