Courtroom Cameras Get Leeway From Justices
The state Supreme Court set rules for when judges can ban cameras in courtrooms and rejected broad bans based on the expected effect of publicity.
Judges, the high court said in Concord, must allow the media to cover all court proceedings open to the public and can limit electronic coverage only if there is a “substantial likelihood” that allowing cameras would cause more harm than banning them.
The ruling resulted from intense coverage of hearings for two teenagers charged with killing two Dartmouth College professors in January 2001.
