No matter what horse wins the $500,000 Champion of Champions tonight, one thing is almost certain: He or she will be the world champion quarter horse for 2002.

For the last six years and 21 times since the race was first run in 1972, the winner of the Champion of Champions has been the American Quarter Horse Assn.’s selection as world champion.

A Ransom, who won the 440-yard Grade I in 2000 and was chosen world champion, will be favored to win again after finishing third last year. He has won his last five starts.
