Premier Apologizes for Slow Reaction to Oil Spill

A month after a tanker spilled fuel oil off northwestern Spain, the prime minister traveled to the tar-stained area to apologize for failing to act more quickly to deal with the disaster.
The government has been heavily criticized for mishandling the sinking of the tanker, Prestige, and the loss of fuel that has killed fisheries and stained beaches. Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar met with local officials to discuss cleanup efforts.
