12,000 Protest Proposed Anti-Subversion Law
From Times Wire Reports
At least 12,000 people marched to protest a planned anti-subversion law they fear will undermine Hong Kong’s freedoms and put the territory more firmly under Beijing’s thumb.
“We don’t want darkness to fall on Hong Kong,” Lee Cheuk Yan, a legislator and union leader, said as protesters waved signs and chanted.
An anti-subversion law is required under Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, but critics say officials’ proposed law is so loosely written, it would let authorities trample on people’s freedoms.
