NCWO Starts Web Site to Pressure Augusta

Share

In its latest attempt to increase pressure on Augusta National Golf Club, the National Council of Women’s Organizations unveiled a Web site Tuesday that will list the corporate chief executives who are members.

“This will draw the public’s attention, in a stark way, to the disparity in these guys’ policies,” Martha Burk, president of the women’s group, said of the site, www.augustadiscriminates.org. “Here we have guys who essentially run the world, who purport to value women as employees and customers, but now we learn what they practice privately.”

The site had yet to post the chief executives under a headline reading, “National Council of Women’s Organization’s Hall of Hypocrisy,” on Tuesday. Member lists have been published previously by national news outlets, but Burk said the NCWO site would attach company policy statements on diversity near the appropriate chief executives’ names.

“It’s all about exclusion,” she said. “This is corporate social abuse. These corporations market to women, they take their dollars. We’re saying, ‘Show them what you really think, guys.’ ”

There are also several alternate Web sites, among them www.petitiononline.com/augusta/petition.html, which allows those opposing Burk’s campaign to petition her to stop.
