Aaliyah’s fans keep her music alive
Sixteen months after her death, R&B; star Aaliyah has the highest-charting new release this week on the nation’s album sales chart with “I Care 4 U,” a collection of her familiar hits along with six tracks that were previously unreleased.
The 21-year-old singer and actress died in August 2001 in a plane crash in the Bahamas. The new album sold 280,000 copies to debut at No. 3.
Meanwhile, Shania Twain’s “Up!” lives up to its title by remaining at the top of the chart for the fourth consecutive week. The album sold 373,000 copies last week and has totaled 2.19 million copies since its release last month. With albums by the Dixie Chicks and Tim McGraw claiming chart positions No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, the music of the moment is country-leaning.
Other significant debuts: Whitney Houston’s “Just Whitney” sold 205,000 copies to open at No. 9, edging R&B; vocal group B2K at No. 10.
