Union Leaders’ Call to Strike Fizzles
Workers in the tiny kingdom of Swaziland largely ignored a national strike called by union leaders to force sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch to ease his tight grip on power.
Public transportation was running normally around the country on the first day of the two-day protest. Businesses not already shut for the holidays functioned normally.
Swaziland has been embroiled in controversy in recent months over its 34-year-old King Mswati III, who has been accused of abducting a teenage girl to be his 10th wife.
