It’s a Little Early for Dodger Optimism

Share

I’ve always been fascinated by the L.A. Times sportswriters’ attempts to convince their readers that the hapless Dodgers will somehow challenge Arizona, San Francisco and the rest of the National League West.

This week, Jason Reid wrote a piece regarding the Diamondbacks’ acquisition of pitcher Elmer Dressens. Jason wrote, “ ... completing a deal that could help the Diamondbacks hold off the Dodgers in the National League West next season.”

Hold off the Dodgers? Jason, wake up and smell the resin bags! The Dodgers were a factor in the National League West 14 years ago, the last time they won a playoff game. Last year they finished in third place in a five-team division and accomplished that with the highest payroll in the division.

I realize the L.A. media must hype the Dodgers each year to stimulate some fan interest, but Jason, save it for April, not December.

As the Dodgers attempt to add some needed offense to their team, the major priority was stated quite succinctly by General Manager Dan Evans. While discussing the pursuit of free-agent outfielder Cliff Floyd, Evans said, “The biggest factor is how a guy fits into our payroll structure.”

What happened to home runs and RBIs?

So the Dodgers are having trouble filling some holes due to financial restraints, yet no word from Darren Dreifort and Kevin Brown, offering to defer some of their bloated salaries for 2003 so they can sign a proven first baseman or outfielder?

I guess winning really means nothing to these guys as long as they keep getting those fat paychecks. Or should I say stealing them.
