From Times Wire Reports

The Dutch supreme court upheld the conviction of a doctor who helped a healthy 86-year-old man kill himself because he was tired of living.

The court said euthanasia rules were never intended to cover such cases.

Dr. Philip Sutorius’ lower-court acquittal had been overturned by an appeals court last year. He was convicted of malpractice for giving lethal pills to Edward Brongersma, who wasn’t seriously ill but feared slow deterioration. Sutorius was not fined or jailed, because a court ruled he had acted out of compassion.
