Advanced Micro, UMC to Build Singapore Plant

Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.’s biggest rival in the computer processor business, said it would build a chip plant in Singapore with United Microelectronics Corp., the second-largest maker of chips for other companies.

The partners said they expected to begin production of microprocessors and other chips in the venture to be known as AU Pte Ltd. by mid-2005. The plant would cut production costs by as much as a third. The companies gave no financial details.

Advanced Micro fell 25 cents to $15.80 on the New York Stock Exchange.
